The Conversion and Reuse of Existing Buildings

Policy CTY4 (PPS21)

It is  three years since the finalised version of Northern Ireland’s  Planning Policy, PPS21, was published, part of it covers the conversion and reuse of existing buildings.

While not a particularly well utilised policy since its publication it has deceptively simple criteria; essentially the building just needs to be of permanent construction. This has been well tested since the policy was introduced and as indicated in the policy amplification it was written specifically about older buildings like barns, schools etc and not chicken houses or tin sheds.

It should be noted that the building can be extended under this policy and there are examples of the extension being as big again as the existing.
