Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme

The Heritage Council, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine manages the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme. The scheme’s objective is to conserve traditional farm buildings and other related structures, such as walls, gate pillars and cobbled yard surfaces in active agricultural use.

As you may know one of 2020 Architects’ ethos is to create architecture that is as sensitive as possible to the environment which surrounds it, by either using existing buildings, local materials or the natural gradient of the site.

The grant scheme opened on 30 January 2025, and you can apply online up until 5pm Monday 10th March 2025.

The Scheme is only open to farmers in the Republic of Ireland participating in and accepted into one of the following Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine schemes:

  1. Approved participants in ACRES (those awaiting confirmations on their ACRES application can apply pending approval).
  2. Participants in EIP Calls 1,2 and 3, Hen Harrier and Pearl Mussel Projects and The Burren Programme who were an active participant as of 31st December 2022 or had completed the full term of the contract for the relevant EIP, or have completed a five-year contract.
  3. Approved participants of the Organic Farming Scheme

AND

Are the owner of the building/related structure, or acting with permission of the owner

There is €500,000 specifically allocated this year for other related farm structures. The key conservation principal of minimum intervention applies. Works which are considered restoration by the Heritage Council are unlikely to be supported with grant aid. Grant amounts vary between €4,000 and €30,000.
