Welcome to the Team!
Matt McGibbon has joined 2020 Architects as an Architect.
Matt began his architectural career in rural Co. Down and, shortly after qualifying as a RIBA-chartered architect, spent six months living and working in the Netherlands, whilst undertaking freelance commissions at home and abroad. He subsequently moved to Bristol and took up employment at a practice specialising in conservation and overseeing works to listed dwellings, gaining hands-on experience in sensitive restoration, traditional materials and detailing, and close liaison with conservation officers.
On returning to N. Ireland, Matt continued to develop his freelance career, delivering domestic new builds and extensions as well as commercial and adaptive reuse projects, including the conversion of an agricultural building into a small micro distillery. Passionate about domestic design, he particularly enjoys the creative process of transforming existing buildings not originally intended for living, notably an existing windmill and a water reservoir, into unique, characterful homes. He finds great satisfaction in balancing design ambition with technical precision and regulatory compliance to achieve thoughtful, buildable results.
Drawing upon his experience overseas and at home, Matt is delighted to contribute to the 2020 team, bringing a balance of design thinking and technical rigour, particularly in projects where heritage, detail and sustainability intersect with the Irish vernacular.
Outside of the studio Matt is a big football enthusiast and a long-suffering Man. Utd fan, loves to travel and spends as much time as he can outdoors exploring the countryside. He enjoys cooking, metal / hard rock, gaming and playing guitar in his spare time.
