What is a Passive House ?

The term Passive House (Passivhaus in German) refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building in order to reduce its ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require very little energy for space heating or cooling by embracing super levels of insulation, air tightness accompanied by mechanical fresh air ventilation with heat recovery and free heat gains from the sun. A passive house would typically use 90% less energy to heat over that of a standard Building Control approved building. In addition to the low energy approach, another key value of the Passive House approach is to promote a healthier and more comfortable living environment by monitoring and controlling indoor temperature, humidity and the build up of harmful gases. It can also be beneficial to people who suffer from allergies and health complaints.
