Update on the ‘grand designs’ project

We don’t want to give too much away and spoil the show, but here’s just a few pics showing the rendering getting underway on the renovated stone part of the house.

We wanted to keep the stone exposed on the inside of the house, so we opted to go for an external insulation system, where low cost EPS insulation is mechanically fixed to the outside of the walls and then a silicone based render system is applied directly onto the insulation.

You can see in the pictures the plastic mesh within the base layer of the render, giving it added strength and preventing cracks.  Once the render is completed, you are unable to tell the difference between this type of construction and traditional cavity walls, as the external finish is the same.

It’s a very cost effective way of insulating your home as the insulation can be applied by anyone who can handle some DIY and it can then be rendered by any plasterer, there are no specialist equipment or trades required, which makes it very accessible for everyone.
